Air Fryer Cod

How long to cook cod in an air fryer?

Cook cod in an air fryer at 200°C / 400°F for about 8–12 minutes for fresh fillets, or 12–15 minutes from frozen, until the thickest part reaches 63°C / 145°F.

Air fryer cod cooks quickly because the fillets are lean and usually not very thick. Use 200°C / 400°F for most fresh or frozen plain cod, choose the time by thickness, and confirm doneness at 63°C / 145°F.

Times are a guide — air fryers vary by 10–20%. Always cook to the safe internal temperature, not just the timer.

How to air fry cod

  1. 1

Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for most plain cod fillets, or 190°C for very thick loins if your air fryer runs hot.

  2. 2

Pat fresh cod dry. For frozen cod, remove any ice crystals and place the fillets in a single layer in the basket.

  3. 3

Air fry using the timing table for the thickness and whether the cod is fresh or frozen. Leave space around each piece so hot air can circulate.

  4. 4

Flip halfway only if the fillet is firm enough to move without breaking. Thin or delicate cod can be left undisturbed.

  5. 5

Check the thickest part with an instant-read thermometer. Cod is done when it reaches 63°C / 145°F; it should look opaque and flake easily.

Pro tips

  • Thickness matters more than weight for cod, so use the thickest part of the fillet to choose a timing range.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Overlapping fillets steam and cook unevenly.
  • For frozen cod, expect extra moisture. If water collects in the basket, continue cooking until the fish reaches 63°C.
  • Breaded frozen cod cooks differently from plain cod and usually needs longer at a slightly lower temperature.
  • Cod flakes easily, so use a thin spatula or fish turner when removing it from the basket.

Frequently asked questions

How long does cod take in the air fryer?

Most fresh cod fillets take 8–12 minutes at 200°C / 400°F. Thin fillets may be done in 6–8 minutes, while thick cod loins can take 10–14 minutes.

Can you cook frozen cod in an air fryer?

Yes. Cook plain frozen cod directly from frozen at 200°C / 400°F for about 10–15 minutes depending on thickness, or up to 18 minutes for very thick loins.

What temperature should cod be cooked to?

Cod should reach 63°C / 145°F in the thickest part. It should also be opaque and flake easily, but a thermometer is the most reliable check.

Do you need to flip cod in the air fryer?

Flip cod halfway if the fillet is thick and firm enough to turn. Very thin or delicate fillets can break, so it is fine to leave them in place and cook until done.

How long do frozen breaded cod fillets take in the air fryer?

Packaged frozen breaded cod fillets usually take about 20–22 minutes at 188°C / 370°F. Follow the package if it gives air-fryer directions, and flip halfway for even crisping.
