How long to cook cabbage in an air fryer?

Cook cabbage in an air fryer at 190°C / 375°F for about 20–22 minutes for 1-inch cabbage steaks, flipping halfway. Thinner steaks can cook at 200°C / 400°F in 12–16 minutes, while wedges and quarters need longer.

Cabbage cooks well in the air fryer because the cut sides brown while the center softens. The right time depends mostly on the cut: shredded cabbage is quick, steaks are moderate, and wedges or quarters take longer because of the dense core.

Times are a guide — air fryers vary by 10–20%. Always cook to the safe internal temperature, not just the timer.

How to air fry cabbage

  1. 1

Preheat the air fryer to 190°C for most cabbage steaks, wedges, or quarters. Use 200°C for thinner steaks when you want faster browning.

  2. 2

Cut the cabbage into the shape you want: steaks, wedges, quarters, or shreds. For steaks and wedges, leave a little core attached so the pieces hold together.

  3. 3

Place the cabbage in a single layer in the basket. Cook in batches if the pieces overlap, because stacked cabbage steams unevenly.

  4. 4

Cook using the timing table, flipping steaks halfway and turning wedges or quarters carefully once during cooking.

  5. 5

Check doneness by texture, not temperature: the center or core should be fork-tender and the outer edges lightly browned. Add 2–5 minutes if the core is still firm.

Pro tips

  • Thickness matters more than total cabbage weight. A thin steak can finish in nearly half the time of a thick wedge.
  • Start checking a few minutes early, especially at 200°C, because loose outer leaves can darken before the middle is fully tender.
  • For wedges and quarters, keep the core intact while cooking, then trim it away after cooking if desired.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Airflow gives cabbage browned edges; overcrowding makes it soft and uneven.
  • If the outside is browning too quickly but the center is still firm, lower the temperature to 180°C and continue cooking until tender.

Frequently asked questions

How long do cabbage steaks take in the air fryer?

Cabbage steaks take 12–16 minutes at 200°C / 400°F when about 2 cm / ¾ inch thick, or 20–22 minutes at 190°C / 375°F when about 2.5 cm / 1 inch thick. Flip them halfway.

How long do cabbage wedges take in the air fryer?

Cabbage wedges usually take 30–40 minutes at 190°C / 375°F. They are done when the core is fork-tender and the edges are browned.

Can you air fry cabbage quarters?

Yes. Large cabbage quarters take about 25–35 minutes or longer at 180–190°C / 360–375°F, depending on how dense they are. Check the core with a fork before serving.

What temperature is best for air fryer cabbage?

Use 190°C / 375°F as the best all-purpose temperature for cabbage. Use 200°C / 400°F for thinner steaks and faster browning, or 180°C / 360°F for very thick pieces that need more time to soften.

Does cabbage need to be in a single layer in the air fryer?

Yes. Cabbage cooks most evenly in a single layer. If steaks or wedges overlap, the covered parts steam and the thick centers may stay firm, so cook in batches if needed.
