How Long to Air Fry Chicken Drumsticks at 400°F
Air fry fresh chicken drumsticks at 400°F for 20–25 minutes for medium legs, or 25–30 minutes for large ones, until 74°C/165°F inside.

This no-breading air fryer chicken drumstick recipe is built around the common 400°F timing question. Medium fresh drumsticks usually finish in about 20–25 minutes, but the safest answer is always to confirm 74°C/165°F in the thickest part without touching bone.
Ingredients
Instructions
Air fryer:205°C / 401°F
Preheat the air fryer to 205°C/400°F for 3 minutes if your model recommends preheating.
Pat the drumsticks very dry with paper towels. This helps the skin brown instead of steam.
Rub the chicken with oil, then coat evenly with salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, thyme, and optional cayenne.
Arrange drumsticks in a single layer with a little space between them. Cook in 2 batches if 6–8 legs do not fit without crowding.
Air fry at 205°C/400°F for 10–12 minutes, then flip the drumsticks with tongs.
Continue air frying for 10–13 minutes more for medium drumsticks, or 13–18 minutes more for large drumsticks or a full basket.
Check the thickest meaty part of each drumstick with an instant-read thermometer, avoiding the bone. Poultry must reach at least 74°C/165°F internally.
If needed, return any underdone pieces to the air fryer for 2–3 minutes at a time. For softer dark-meat texture, you may cook drumsticks closer to 77–79°C/170–175°F.
Rest for 5 minutes before serving so the juices settle.
Tips & tricks
- For 900 g / 2 lb of fresh medium drumsticks, plan on 20–25 minutes at 205°C/400°F. Large legs or crowded baskets often need 25–30 minutes.
- Do not stack drumsticks. Air circulation is what crisps the skin, so batch cooking gives better results than overcrowding.
- Oil is helpful but minimal; use just enough to lightly coat the skin and help the dry rub adhere.
- Chicken legs and drumsticks are often used interchangeably, but a whole chicken leg includes the thigh. This timing is for drumsticks only.
- This recipe is for fresh, thawed drumsticks. Frozen raw drumsticks need different timing and can season unevenly.
