How Long to Air Fry a Baked Potato at 400°F: 8–12 oz Russet Guide

This air fryer baked potato guide answers the common 400°F timing question by potato weight. Russets cook best for crisp skin and a light, fluffy middle, and the same method works for a classic jacket potato at 200°C.

After step 2
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C/400°F for 3 minutes if your model recommends preheating.

  2. Scrub the potatoes well, remove any eyes or green spots, and pat completely dry. Pierce each potato 6–8 times with a fork so steam can escape.

  3. Rub the potatoes with the oil, then sprinkle all over with salt and optional black pepper.

  4. Place the potatoes directly in the air-fryer basket with space between them. Do not wrap in foil if you want crisp skin.

  5. Air fry at 200°C/400°F, turning once halfway through. Use this guide: 225 g/8 oz potatoes take 38–45 minutes, 285 g/10 oz potatoes take 42–50 minutes, and 340 g/12 oz potatoes take 48–55 minutes.

  6. Start checking at the low end of the range. The potato is done when a thin knife or skewer slides into the center with no resistance and the inside is fluffy; for a temperature cue, aim for about 98–99°C/208–211°F in the center.

  7. Rest for 3 minutes, then split open, fluff with a fork, and add your preferred toppings.

Tips & tricks

  • For very large 400–450 g/14–16 oz potatoes, start checking around 55 minutes; they may need 60 minutes or more.
  • Crowding slows cooking. Cook in a single layer with air space around each potato, and work in batches if needed.
  • Foil makes softer, steamed skin. For a jacket-potato texture, keep the potato unwrapped.
  • For a faster version, microwave pierced potatoes for 5–7 minutes first, then oil, salt, and air fry at 200°C/400°F for 15–25 minutes until the skin is crisp and the center is tender.
  • Oven-style air fryers may run cooler than basket models, so use the doneness cues instead of time alone.
