Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Thighs: Bone-In Skin-On 6–8 oz Guide

This air fryer frozen chicken thighs method is for bone-in, skin-on thighs straight from the freezer—no thawing, no breading, and no guesswork. Start them at 190°C to thaw the surface, season once the frost melts, then keep cooking until every thigh reaches 74°C/165°F in the thickest part.

Instructions

Air fryer:190°C / 374°F

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 190°C for 3 minutes. Arrange the frozen chicken thighs in a single layer, skin-side down if possible. Do not stack them.

  2. Air fry for 10 minutes to melt surface frost and loosen any pieces that are stuck together. If thighs were frozen together, carefully separate them now and spread them out with space between each piece.

  3. Pat away excess moisture from the skin with paper towel if needed. Brush the thighs with oil, then mix the salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and thyme and sprinkle it over all sides.

  4. Return the thighs to the basket skin-side up. Air fry at 190°C for 15 minutes.

  5. Flip the thighs, then air fry for 5 minutes more. Flip back to skin-side up for the final crisping.

  6. Check the thickest part of every thigh with an instant-read thermometer, avoiding the bone. Poultry must reach at least 74°C/165°F internally.

  7. If any thigh is below 74°C/165°F, continue air frying in 3–5 minute bursts, checking each piece again. Most 170–225 g bone-in frozen thighs finish in 25–35 minutes total, depending on thickness and air-fryer model.

  8. Rest for 5 minutes before serving so the juices settle and the skin stays crisp.

Tips & tricks

  • For crispier skin, finish at 200°C for 2–3 minutes after the chicken has already reached 74°C/165°F.
  • If your thighs are larger than 225 g each, expect extra time and rely on the thermometer rather than the clock.
  • Avoid sugary sauces at the beginning; brush on barbecue sauce, honey garlic sauce, or teriyaki only during the last 3–5 minutes to prevent burning.
  • Cook in batches if the thighs do not fit in one layer. Crowding slows cooking and can leave frozen centers unsafe.
  • Skin color is not a doneness test. Frozen chicken can brown on the outside before the center reaches a safe temperature.
